NCC Issues Licence to STN, Creating Rare Challenge to MTN-Airtel Nigeria Duopoly
Nigeria's NCC has issued a new telecoms licence to STN, creating a rare competitive challenge to the MTN-Airtel duopoly that currently controls approximately 86 percent of the Nigerian mobile market. Analysis notes the licence does not yet materially disturb the incumbents' grip but marks an unusual competitive shift in Africa's largest mobile market.
STN's Licence: a door opened, but a room not yet entered
MTN and Airtel together hold roughly 86 percent of Nigeria's mobile market. A new licence for STN doesn't move that number — not yet, possibly not for years.
The honest read is that a licence is permission to compete, not competition itself. Building spectrum, towers and distribution in Africa's most complex telecoms market takes capital and time that no piece of paper can substitute.
Still, the NCC issuing it at all is worth noting. A market this concentrated, for this long, doesn't get healthier without someone being let in. Whether STN can actually build is the only question that matters from here.
