Kagame co-chairs global AI governance commission, asserting African agency
Rwanda's President Paul Kagame has been named co-chair of a global AI governance commission, representing Africa's most prominent formal role yet in shaping international AI policy. The appointment signals a continental push for a seat at the table as AI governance frameworks take shape globally.
Kagame's Seat: showing up is not the same as shaping the rules
A seat at the table matters. But the article's sharpest line belongs to SAP's Sunil Geness, not Kagame: Africa must enter the room with a defined agenda, not just a posture of caution.
The African Union already has a Continental AI Strategy. It's a document. Geness is asking 54 governments to convert it into aligned positions before Geneva — because a continent that arrives divided, or arrives only to react, hands the agenda to whoever prepared.
Co-chairing a commission is symbolic power. Coordinated positions are real power. The question is whether African states do the second thing before the first one expires.
