Africa's First Stablecoin Goes Live on Circle's Arc Blockchain as ZARU Rand Token Launches
A rand-denominated stablecoin called ZARU has gone live on Circle's Arc institutional blockchain, described as Africa's first stablecoin on the platform. The launch is being framed as a landmark development for African foreign exchange infrastructure and a live cross-border FX experiment with implications for how local currency stablecoins are adopted on the continent.
ZARU: the rand finally gets a settlement layer that doesn't sleep
The rand's problem in cross-border trade has never been trust — it's plumbing. Correspondent banking moves money in batches, through chains of intermediaries, during business hours. ZARU's atomic settlement on Circle's Arc means both sides of a rand-dollar trade complete simultaneously or not at all, with no overnight exposure and no weekend gap.
That's a real infrastructure shift, not a branding exercise.
The harder question is whether institutional liquidity actually follows. Luno as the primary venue and Standard Bank and Absa as banking partners give ZARU credible backing — but StableFX needs market makers to price the pair continuously, and early founding partnerships don't guarantee that depth holds under stress.
The IMF warned recently that local-currency stablecoins on shared blockchains can accelerate a quiet slide toward dollar substitution. ZARU's one-to-one rand backing held onshore is the direct answer to that concern. Whether it's enough of an answer depends on whether the rand-side liquidity is genuinely deep, or just deep enough for the launch announcement.
