South Africa Opens Public Consultation on Competitive Electricity Market
South Africa has launched a public consultation process on reforming its electricity market toward a competitive model, a process that could fundamentally reshape how power is bought and sold across Africa's largest grid. The consultation follows President Ramaphosa's concurrent sign-off on stripping Eskom of its transmission assets.
SA Power Reform: stripping Eskom was the easy part
Separating the transmission grid from Eskom — done, and genuinely hard-won — removed one blocker. A public consultation on building a competitive electricity market is a different order of problem entirely.
A competitive market means multiple generators can sell power, and buyers can actually choose. That requires pricing rules, an independent grid operator that everyone trusts, and a regulator with teeth. South Africa has to design all of that from scratch, in public, while the lights are still unreliable.
The consultation is a real step. But the gap between a reformed grid structure and a market that actually attracts private generators — and cheaper power — is where these processes quietly stall.
