PAPSS Reports 1,000% Transaction Volume Growth as Pan-African Payments System Gains Scale
The Pan-African Payment and Settlement System has reported a 1,000 percent increase in transaction volumes, a landmark figure that signals accelerating adoption of the continent's dedicated cross-border payments infrastructure. PAPSS is targeting faster uptake as the volume surge provides evidence of growing merchant and financial institution participation.
PAPSS: the 1,000% that doesn't settle the real question
A tenfold jump in transaction volumes is real progress. But notice what PAPSS's own CEO is saying alongside it: the next phase, starting 2027, is about getting banks and fintechs to actually route everyday payments through the network.
That gap — between infrastructure that exists and infrastructure that gets used — is where pan-African projects have historically died quietly.
The claimed savings are striking: 92 to 95 per cent cheaper per transaction, near-instant settlement. A trader in Lagos or a supplier in Addis Ababa would take that deal immediately. The question is whether their bank ever offers it to them.
