Starlink has reached 98,642 subscribers in Nigeria, approaching near-parity with incumbent fixed broadband provider Spectranet and signalling a structural shift in the country's broadband competitive landscape. The satellite operator's rapid subscriber growth underscores the accelerating role of low-earth orbit connectivity in reshaping African internet markets.

Spectranet took over a decade to build a base of 111,000 subscribers. Starlink matched it in roughly three years — and is closing the remaining gap of 12,742 at more than double Spectranet's current growth rate.
That's not mainly a story about satellites. It's a story about what happens when terrestrial internet leaves enough of Nigeria underserved that a premium-priced space-based alternative finds 99,000 paying customers anyway.
And with Amazon's Kuiper still on its way, Spectranet's position as market leader may be the least of the incumbents' worries.
