SA Compute: the 'most powerful' claim is the distraction — the arrival is the point
Stratos Lab and its partners have deployed frontier Nvidia B300 GPUs — chips so tightly controlled that Taiwanese authorities are still running export-compliance checks as they leave the factory — into a data centre north of Johannesburg. That is genuinely new.
The 'most powerful cluster on the continent' argument is shakier. Restated on a like-for-like measure, Cassava Technologies' older chips likely deliver more than three times the raw compute. The headline number uses a low-precision measure that flatters smaller clusters.
But the bragging rights are the wrong thing to watch. What matters is that cutting-edge AI hardware, the kind that was effectively unavailable here six months ago, is now physically landing on the continent. Every serious AI team that no longer has to route workloads through European or US clouds is a team that can price, build and iterate locally.
