Safaricom Crosses One Million Home Internet Subscribers in Kenya
Safaricom has crossed one million fixed internet subscribers in Kenya, becoming the first operator in the country to reach that milestone. The figure, which reflects the addition of approximately 289,000 users over the past year, demonstrates that home broadband is a commercially viable business in the Kenyan market.
Safaricom Fibre: a million subscribers is the easy part
Reaching one million home internet subscribers sounds like a ceiling. It's actually a floor — and the competition has noticed.
Safaricom got here by making fibre inseparable from the rest of its ecosystem: bundle your home broadband with mobile data and M-Pesa and switching becomes painful. Airtel tried to undercut that by selling wholesale bandwidth to smaller providers, generated zero commercial revenue in two years, and is now winding the whole thing down.
The uncomfortable question is what happens to the market when the only operator with genuine scale uses that scale to squeeze rivals out of the infrastructure layer entirely. One million subscribers is a commercial validation. It's also a signal that Kenya's home internet market may already be won.
