Standard Bank Expands UnionPay Online Payments Across Nine African Markets
Standard Bank has extended its partnership with UnionPay International to enable online e-commerce payments across nine African markets, adding a cross-border transaction layer to its existing card network. The expansion represents a concrete pan-African payments infrastructure move by Africa's largest bank by assets.
Standard Bank: Africa's largest bank is quietly becoming its payments backbone
Seven million UnionPay cards are already in circulation across Africa. Standard Bank just gave 900 merchants across nine markets a way to accept them online — in local currency, dollars, or both.
That last detail is the real thing. Letting a Tanzanian hotel or a Ghanaian e-commerce seller choose which currency to settle in removes a friction that has quietly killed cross-border sales for years.
Standard Bank is doing this while pursuing an OPay stake and financing tower rollout across the continent. The pattern is consistent: an incumbent bank assembling the unglamorous infrastructure layer that everyone else's ambitions quietly depend on.
