First systematic data on 56 African tech layoff events published

A new dataset has documented 56 distinct tech layoff events across Africa between 2023 and 2026, providing the first systematic empirical account of workforce reductions in the continental ecosystem. The data surfaces patterns of stress that have previously been anecdotal or reported on a case-by-case basis.

Africa's Layoffs: finally, a map instead of rumours

Fifty-six tech layoff events in three years is not a catastrophic number — but until now, nobody actually knew the number.

The ecosystem has been navigating this correction largely blind, with each closure treated as isolated bad news rather than part of a pattern. That blind spot matters: founders can't read signals, investors can't calibrate risk, and policymakers can't respond to a trend they can't see.

The most valuable thing about this dataset isn't what it reveals about the past — it's that the ecosystem now has a baseline to reason from.
