Airtel Money Debuts on London Stock Exchange at $7 Billion Valuation
Airtel Money has listed on the London Stock Exchange at $2.59 per share, giving the mobile money business a reported market capitalisation of $7 billion. The listing creates Africa's first large-cap public mobile money pure-play and is being described as a landmark valuation benchmark for the continent's mobile money sector.
Airtel Money IPO: Africa built it; London is pricing it
The $7 billion valuation is real. The 36% revenue growth is real. The $213 billion in payments processed is real.
What's also real: not a single cent of today's proceeds goes to Airtel Money itself. This is a secondary sale — existing shareholders cashing out, with the company receiving nothing new to deploy.
The African customers generating those volumes, and the African investors who might want a stake in the infrastructure they use daily, remain largely locked out. London gets the listing; Britain's trade secretary calls it a 'win for the UK.' He's not wrong.
The win for Africa is harder to name.
