Ghana Opens $230 Million 5G Spectrum Auction With Higher Price for MTN
Ghana has launched a 5G spectrum auction valued at approximately $230 million, with MTN facing a higher reserve price than other bidders in a structure that reshapes competitive dynamics in the market. The auction outcome will determine the pace and shape of 5G rollout in one of West Africa's most developed mobile markets.

MTN holds roughly four in every five mobile internet connections in Ghana. Letting it bid for 5G spectrum on the same terms as smaller rivals would almost certainly hand it the same dominance in the next network generation too.
So Ghana's regulator has done something unusual: it has added a 40% price premium to MTN's bids. Not a ban — just a higher entry cost, calibrated to give Telecel and others a genuine shot at securing spectrum.
This is a real policy experiment worth watching across the continent. The uncomfortable question is whether a price surcharge actually reshapes competition, or just raises MTN's costs while it wins anyway — and passes the bill to Ghanaian subscribers.
