
Rain and Huawei Deploy World-First Sub-1GHz Massive MIMO 5G Network in South Africa
South African mobile operator Rain and Huawei have launched what they describe as the world's first multi-thousand-site sub-1 GHz Massive MIMO 5G network. The deployment is positioned as a global infrastructure milestone for low-band 5G coverage at scale.
Rain's 5G: Africa built the blueprint the world will copy
Low-band spectrum travels far and punches through walls — that's why every operator wants it. The problem has always been that it carries far less data than the high-band frequencies powering dense urban 5G. Rain and Huawei just cracked that trade-off at scale: thousands of live sites delivering coverage depth AND triple the capacity of conventional equipment.
The world-first label is earned. No one has done this commercially at this scale.
For a continent where the coverage gap is the defining infrastructure problem, that matters. A technology that wrings more capacity from the spectrum best suited to reaching rural and indoor users isn't a nice-to-have — it's the architecture the rest of Africa's 5G buildout will be looking at.
