MTN Nigeria Fintech Revenue Slumps After Airtime Lending Suspension
MTN Nigeria's fintech revenue has declined following the suspension of its airtime lending product, exposing the vulnerability of telco-fintech revenue models to single-product shocks. The development adds a cautionary dimension to MTN Nigeria's broader H1 2026 financial performance.
MTN Fintech: five million wallets, falling revenue — that's the whole story
MTN Nigeria's fintech revenue fell 7.2% in the first half of 2026 even as its wallet base hit five million active users. The culprit was one product: Nigeria's central bank forced it to suspend airtime and data lending, and that single suspension dragged the whole fintech line down.
That's a fragile architecture. When one product accounts for enough revenue that losing it moves the entire segment, you don't really have a diversified fintech business — you have a lending product with wallets attached.
The pending split of MoMo into a standalone entity makes this harder to ignore, not easier. A standalone fintech business needs its own revenue logic. Right now, MTN Nigeria's doesn't have one that survives a single regulatory call.
