Native Acquires Frontline Research to Build AI Trade Data Layer Across 14 African Markets
Native has acquired Frontline Research to build an AI-powered trade data layer spanning 14 African markets, targeting the continent's estimated $1.7 trillion trade economy. The deal represents a concrete cross-border intelligence play in a sector where data fragmentation remains a persistent barrier to formal trade.
Offline Trade: the data you can't scrape is the only data that matters
Eighty percent of Africa's consumer spending — think Coca-Cola, Heineken, Unilever — moves through small, fragmented physical shops that no algorithm can reliably see from the outside.
Frontline spent years building actual field panels in 14 markets to measure who is winning shelf space in those stores. That isn't a dataset you can reconstruct from receipts or satellite imagery. It has to be earned, survey by survey, market by market.
Native's CEO says it plainly: this signal "cannot be credibly scraped, inferred or bought off the shelf." That proprietary quality is the whole point. The global brands willing to pay for it already include AB InBev, Diageo and Unilever.
The real story here isn't an AI acquisition — it's that the most valuable layer in African commerce turns out to be the one built closest to the ground.
