Amazon's Kuiper satellite service and SpaceX's Starlink are escalating their competition for African broadband market share, with both operators vying for spectrum access and subscriber bases across the continent. The rivalry is drawing regulatory attention and reshaping how connectivity infrastructure is governed in multiple African markets.
Kuiper vs Starlink: the licence terms are the real competition
Kenya's 30% local ownership rule is the detail that actually decides this race.
Starlink already negotiated a waiver around it. Amazon, arriving later, is being held to the standard — and must form a joint venture with Kenyan partners within three years if its licence is granted.
That asymmetry hands Starlink a structural advantage that has nothing to do with satellites. The company with 10,000 satellites in orbit also got in first and on easier terms. Amazon's 367 in orbit is a gap it can close; a regulatory head start is harder to claw back.
