Nvidia Reported in Talks to Acquire Hugging Face in Open-Source AI Shake-Up
Nvidia is reportedly in talks to acquire Hugging Face, the leading open-source AI model hub, in a deal that could reshape how developers globally — including across Africa — access and deploy open-source AI tools. If completed, the transaction would place the world's dominant AI chip maker in control of the most widely used open-source AI distribution platform.
Hugging Face: open-source just got a corporate landlord
Hugging Face is where African AI builders go to grab models, share datasets and skip the cost of building from scratch. It has stayed useful precisely because no single company controlled it.
At $12.9 billion, Nvidia — which already makes the chips everyone building AI depends on — would own the shelves those builders shop from too.
That's one company sitting at both ends of the pipeline. Whether Nvidia keeps the platform genuinely open, or quietly tilts it toward its own hardware, will determine whether the tool stays as useful as it is today — or becomes one more thing African developers pay a premium to access.
