Africa ClimateTech Funding Hits $6.35 Billion, Overtaking Fintech as Top VC Sector
Africa's climate technology sector has attracted $6.35 billion in cumulative venture investment, surpassing fintech to become the continent's top VC sector by total funding. The shift represents a structural reordering of investor priorities across African markets.
ClimateTech Milestone: overtaking fintech is the easy part
Beating fintech to become Africa's biggest funded sector sounds like a turning point — and in one sense it is.
But look at what's inside the $6.35 billion. Energy alone swallowed 65% of it. Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa took 76%. Startups founded solely by women received less than 1% across a full decade.
This isn't a broad ecosystem maturing — it's a narrow one getting deeper. The same geographies, the same subsector, the same founder profiles attracting almost all of the capital.
The headline number tells you climate is now taken seriously. The breakdown tells you most founders building climate solutions across most of the continent are still largely shut out.
