African Startups Raise $2.49 Billion in First Nine Months of 2026 as Q3 Rebounds
African startups raised a combined $2.49 billion in the first nine months of 2026, with the third quarter showing a rebound in activity. The figure provides the first continent-wide nine-month funding benchmark for the year.
Q3 Rebound: more money at the top, fewer doors at the bottom
The nine-month number looks healthy. $2.49 billion, 7.8% up on last year — a real recovery signal after the collapse that bottomed out in 2024.
But the data tells two stories at once. Deal volume actually fell — 315 disclosed deals this year against 403 in the same period last year. More money, fewer transactions. That means larger cheques concentrating in fewer hands.
We already know early-stage funding is drying up, with the smallest raises hitting their lowest count since 2021. The Q3 rebound doesn't change that — it mostly reflects bigger growth rounds for companies already well past their first cheque.
The ecosystem isn't recovering evenly. It's recovering at the top.
