CBN Opens Regulatory Sandbox Formally Welcoming Virtual Asset Operators
Nigeria's Central Bank has launched a regulatory sandbox that formally includes virtual asset operators and fintech innovators in a supervised testing environment. The opening advances the dedicated crypto track first reported when the sandbox was announced earlier this week, providing regulated pathways for digital asset businesses in Africa's largest economy.
CBN Sandbox: two auditions, still no stage
The unification order was supposed to end this. One council, clear lanes.
Instead, the CBN has now formalised its own supervised testing track while the SEC's crypto cohort is still running — Luno and six others already inside a parallel process. Two sandboxes, two overseers, and the council that was meant to separate their turf still hasn't published the framework that would make either door meaningful.
For a founder deciding where to put their compliance energy, that's not progress. It's the same puzzle with a fresher coat of paint.
