Nigeria's Broadband Speed Jumps 155% as Fibre Connections Triple
Nigeria's broadband speeds have risen 155 percent as fibre connections across the country have tripled, according to new data. The figures represent a concrete infrastructure milestone with direct implications for startups, digital service providers, and connectivity investors operating in Africa's largest economy.
Nigeria's Broadband: the speed is real, but the reach isn't
Going from 13.5 Mbps to 34.5 Mbps in three years is a genuine infrastructure win — faster, more consistent, quarter after quarter.
But fibre-to-the-premises tripling still lands mostly in premises that already had options. Nigeria's last broadband plan targeted 70% coverage by 2025 and finished at 52%. The bottom tenth of connections — a rough proxy for the users hardest to reach — only moved from 2.24 Mbps to 6 Mbps.
Speed without reach is a better service for Lagos, not a different economy. The 90,000-kilometre fibre network the government just announced is exactly the test of whether this momentum travels beyond the cities that already benefit.
