Binance, Luno and VALR Apply for Kenyan Crypto Licences Under New VASP Framework
Binance, Luno, VALR, and other major crypto firms are applying for licences under Kenya's newly enacted Virtual Asset Service Provider regulatory framework. The applications represent the most tangible enforcement of any African crypto licensing regime to date.
Kenya Crypto: the real test is whether anyone actually gets licensed
Global firms lining up to apply is genuinely encouraging. But applications aren't licences.
What matters now is whether Kenya's Capital Markets Authority processes them on the timelines the framework promises — and whether the licence categories are broad enough that a firm like VALR, applying for four distinct activities at once, doesn't spend the next two years in procedural limbo.
Every other African market watching Nairobi is really asking one thing: does regulatory clarity translate into operational reality, or just a well-designed waiting room?
