EBRD Extends €270M Financing to Yas for Kenya and Senegal Network Expansion
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has extended €270 million in financing to pan-African operator Yas to support network expansion in Kenya and Senegal. The deal marks EBRD's first transaction in Senegal and the first sub-Saharan local-currency A/B loan structure under the bank's framework.
Yas Deal: the structure here is as important as the size
€270 million is a headline number. But the mechanism underneath it is what actually matters for the continent.
EBRD packaged this as a local-currency facility — part of the loan is denominated in Kenyan shillings, not euros. That detail is quietly significant. Most infrastructure financing in Africa arrives in hard currency, which means operators carry the risk that a weakening shilling or franc will inflate their repayments overnight. Lending in local currency shifts that burden back to where it belongs.
This is the EBRD's first time doing this in sub-Saharan Africa. If it works — if Yas builds the fibre and the loan performs — other lenders have a template to follow. That matters far more than one deal.
