Vox and Frogfoot Raise $900 Million to Wire 360,000 South African Homes Per Year
Vox and Frogfoot have raised $900 million — valuing Frogfoot at R14.4 billion — to expand fibre broadband to 360,000 South African homes annually, representing one of Africa's largest broadband infrastructure commitments. The fresh capital will accelerate fibre rollout into townships and underserved communities at meaningful scale.
Frogfoot: quadrupling rollout is the easy part
360,000 homes a year is an impressive number. But South Africa has roughly 4.5 million homes connected to high-speed internet today, against a stated potential of 15 million. The gap isn't mainly capital — it's been affordability in townships where incomes are low and prepaid models are still unproven at scale.
Frogfoot's own Frogfoot Rise product targets exactly this market. The $900 million bet is that prepaid fibre can work the way prepaid mobile did — getting price-sensitive households online without monthly contract commitments.
That's the real experiment here. The wire going into a township home is the easy part. Getting a family to keep paying for the service, month after month, is the thing that determines whether this capital actually closes the digital divide or just extends infrastructure into communities that can't yet sustain it.
