Comsol Secures Billions to Build South Africa's Private National 5G Broadband Network
South African connectivity firm Comsol has secured multibillion-rand backing to build a private national 5G wholesale broadband network, entering the home broadband market with a strategy built around 60MHz of spectrum. The buildout is seen as delivering what the government's Wireless Open Access Network policy failed to achieve, reshaping competitive dynamics for South African ISPs and mobile operators.
Comsol: the private sector doing what South Africa's government couldn't
South Africa spent years trying to build a Wireless Open Access Network — a government-mandated wholesale broadband layer that would let smaller providers ride shared infrastructure instead of each building their own. It never materialised.
Comsol is now doing exactly that, privately. One million households already covered in Gauteng, 2,000 base stations planned nationally, and a wholesale-only model that means Comsol never competes with the ISPs and MVNOs buying capacity from it — which is precisely why those partners will trust it.
The spectrum policy South Africa unlocked earlier this year made this possible. The uncomfortable question is what it says that private capital solved in six months what policy failed to deliver in years.
