AI Cybercrime Threat Grows as Agentic AI Boosts Ransomware Across Africa
ESET data indicates that agentic AI is materially amplifying the capabilities of ransomware operators targeting African businesses, with Check Point separately reporting that Africa averages over 3,200 weekly cyberattacks — above the global mean. The accumulating threat data adds urgency to the continent-wide AI-cybercrime risk first flagged via Interpol and LexisNexis reporting this week.
AI Threats: the real danger isn't the ransomware you can see
The screen-locking scareware topping Africa's threat list at 44.7% is mostly noise, according to ESET's own analysts. The organised ransomware groups sit quietly beneath it, picking specific, high-value targets.
What makes this harder to defend against is the AI skills problem: ESET scanned roughly 900,000 small code add-ons built for AI systems and found more than 3,000 outright malicious — 84% of them running commands without the user ever knowing. Credential theft, network mapping, and the ability to rewrite their own code after installation.
