Cape Town Approves Massive New Data Centre Development
Cape Town has granted approval for a large-scale data centre development that, according to reporting, rivals the total capacity of Teraco — Africa's largest colocation operator. The approval is being described as a landmark infrastructure moment for Africa's cloud economy, arriving as the continent's total data centre capacity surpasses 500MW with 890MW more in the pipeline.
Equinix Cape Town: 170MW approved, but the community got the small print last
Equinix's two approved Cape Town facilities would add roughly 170MW of capacity — nearly matching Teraco's entire 189MW continental footprint in a single development. That number is genuinely significant.
But the objectors raised something specific: that Equinix told the community as little as possible about water use, electricity demand and environmental impact before approval. And Equinix's own response — 'should we decide to proceed, we will provide detailed information' — confirms the sequence. The community got the approval before it got the facts.
For the ecosystem, the infrastructure is real and needed. But a 170MW facility lands hard on a city grid and a water supply. Getting that disclosure right before the vote, not after, is what separates investment that builds local trust from investment that demands locals absorb the cost quietly.
