MTN Eyes Banking Licences and 30 Million Nigerian Fintech Users in Finance Push
MTN Group is pursuing banking licences across multiple African markets while separately targeting a sixfold increase in its Nigerian fintech user base from 5 million to 30 million. The dual announcements signal a deliberate escalation of MTN's strategy to compete directly with incumbent banks and digital lenders across the continent.
MTN Banking: the float is already the moat
MTN Nigeria isn't starting from scratch. It already holds the idle cash — the "float" sitting in millions of mobile money wallets — that a bank would kill for. The question Mupita is really asking is: why keep paying partner banks to lend that money out when MTN can do it directly?
That's what a banking licence unlocks. Not the ability to attract deposits from zero — the ability to deploy the deposits it already has.
Going from 5 million to 30 million Nigerian users is the ambition. But the lending margin on the float it already controls is the engine. Watch whether regulators treat this as a telco applying for a banking licence, or a de facto bank finally asking for the paperwork to match.
