Rwanda Launches eKash National Interoperable Instant Payment System
Rwanda has formally launched eKash, a nationally unified digital payments system designed to enable fully interoperable instant transactions across the country. The rollout positions Rwanda as a potential model for other African markets pursuing payments infrastructure consolidation.
eKash: when the infrastructure disappears, the ecosystem wins
Rwanda just cut the cost of moving money between a bank and a mobile wallet from roughly $3.40 to one US cent — flat, regardless of amount.
That price drop matters. But the deeper thing is what eKash actually is: invisible infrastructure. No new app to download, no new account to open. Every existing banking app, USSD menu and mobile wallet simply works with every other one now.
When payments infrastructure is this frictionless, it stops being a product and starts being a utility — like water from a tap. That is when the real innovation layer above it can finally get interesting.
