Mombasa Data Centre: the power plant is the real announcement
Most data centres ask the national grid for electricity. AMACO's Hercules project in Mombasa is building its own — LNG-powered gas turbines on a dedicated barge, generation and computing bolted together as one structure.
That is the genuinely new idea here, and it matters beyond this single project. Kenya's grid has plenty of generation in aggregate; the problem for a facility this power-hungry is whether the right amount of reliable electricity can reach the right place at the right time. AMACO's answer is to stop asking.
If it works, it becomes a blueprint. Africa's data-centre pipeline keeps stalling on exactly this bottleneck, and a model that solves power by owning it — rather than negotiating for it — changes what's possible for the next project too.
