Africa's Single Cable Repair Ship Creates Continent-Wide Internet Outage Risk
The ITU has issued a formal warning that Africa's entire submarine cable network is serviced by only one dedicated repair ship, creating the risk of prolonged continent-wide internet outages following any cable fault. The warning institutionalises a vulnerability first documented the previous day and adds regulatory urgency to calls for additional repair capacity.
One Ship: now it's official
The ITU formalising this warning doesn't change the hardware reality — there is still one repair ship, the wait is still measured in weeks, the permitting delays still double repair times even when a ship arrives.
What it changes is who has to respond. An ITU warning creates diplomatic and procurement pressure that a researcher's report does not.
That matters. The ships on order don't arrive until 2028 at the earliest. The question is whether the warning accelerates a fix — coordinated permits, shared regional repair capacity, emergency access agreements — or just adds another document to a file while the continent waits.
