Vercel Acquires Egyptian AI Infrastructure Startup Stakpak
US cloud company Vercel, valued at $9.3 billion, has acquired Egyptian infrastructure startup Stakpak in what is described as the first acquisition of an African AI infrastructure startup by a US unicorn. The deal marks a landmark exit for Africa's AI infrastructure sector.

Five hundred thousand dollars in pre-seed funding. Acquired by a company worth $9.3 billion. By any measure, that is a remarkable return on a remarkably small bet.
But George Fahmy built it from Cairo and relocated to San Francisco. Vercel found him there.
The technology was African-made. The company it joined is American. That distinction matters — not to diminish the exit, but because the ecosystem celebrates the flag on the deal while the founder, the talent and the value creation are increasingly based elsewhere.
The win is real. The question is whether it seeds anything back on the continent, or whether it just confirms that the most efficient path for an African AI founder runs through the diaspora.
