Yellow Card Raises $40M to Expand Stablecoin Payment Infrastructure
Yellow Card has raised $40 million in a round backed by SC Ventures and Sony, with the funding earmarked to expand its stablecoin-powered payment infrastructure beyond Africa into Latin America and Asia-Pacific. The raise arrives as Africa records the highest stablecoin adoption rate globally, reinforcing the continent's role as a proving ground for crypto payment infrastructure.
Yellow Card: Africa built the proof, now someone else gets the prize
Standard Chartered and Sony didn't back Yellow Card because stablecoins are interesting. They backed it because the company already proved the model — $10 billion in transactions, 22 licences, 20-plus African countries — and now they want that infrastructure pointed at Latin America and Asia-Pacific.
That's the uncomfortable read inside an otherwise clean headline. Africa was the hard proving ground: the currency volatility, the patchy local payment systems, the Bank of Ghana censure, the regulatory fights. Yellow Card absorbed all of it to become credible.
The capital that credibility attracted is now funding expansion elsewhere.
None of that makes this a bad outcome — Yellow Card is an African-founded company and its African operations aren't going away. But the pattern is worth naming: the continent absorbs the risk and complexity that makes a company battle-hardened, and the growth capital then chases the next frontier. Who else is building that proof right now, and will they face the same gravity?
