Nigeria's CBN Local Data-Hosting Mandate Forces Bank and Fintech Cloud Overhaul
The Central Bank of Nigeria's 2027 local data-hosting mandate is forcing banks and fintechs to fundamentally overhaul their cloud infrastructure, placing Nigeria's data centre sector under major competitive and capacity pressure. The directive is expected to reshape technology procurement and investment decisions across Nigeria's financial services industry ahead of the compliance deadline.
Nigeria's Cloud Mandate: 26 data centres and a ₦1.07 quadrillion question
Nigeria's financial system processed over ₦1 quadrillion in electronic transactions last year. Almost all of it ran through Amazon, Microsoft, and Google's servers — sitting outside Nigeria's borders.
The CBN's 2027 deadline changes that. But the honest question is whether 50–56 megawatts of live local capacity is enough to absorb a migration of this scale, even with 124 megawatts of partially equipped space waiting in the wings.
The operators say they're ready. They may be right. But 'ready in principle' and 'ready under simultaneous migration pressure from every major bank and fintech at once' are very different things. If the capacity isn't there when compliance is due, the mandate doesn't protect Nigerian data — it just creates a scramble.
