113 Million Nigerians Now Below Poverty Line, Reframing Addressable Market for Tech Founders
The 2026 Multidimensional Poverty Index report finds that 113.3 million Nigerians are now living in poverty, a figure that materially reframes the addressable market assumptions for every Nigeria-facing technology founder. The data adds a hard statistical anchor to earlier reporting on Nigerian consumer purchasing power erosion.
Nigeria's 200 Million: the number that was never the market
Thirty-one per cent of Nigeria's poor population has no electricity. Nearly forty per cent lack clean cooking fuel. When those are the daily realities, a fintech app or a consumer platform isn't a solution — it's an irrelevance.
The OPHI/UNDP data puts a hard number on what many founders quietly knew: the actual paying market was always Lagos, Abuja, and a handful of other urban pockets. The 200 million figure was always a ceiling, not a floor.
The honest recalibration isn't pessimism — it's clarity. Build something that cuts a cost, generates income, or bypasses broken infrastructure, and Nigeria's market is still enormous. Sell convenience to people fighting for survival, and the math never worked.
