Kenya's Coast Gets First Fully Protected Submarine Cable as LuLu System Launches
The LuLu submarine cable system has launched as the first fully protected undersea cable serving Kenya's coastline, introducing new redundancy for East Africa's international connectivity. The deployment addresses a longstanding vulnerability in the region's subsea infrastructure.

East Africa has submarine cables. What it has lacked is a system designed to keep working when one gets cut — and cuts happen constantly, from anchors, from trawlers, from currents.
LuLu's architecture is the point: a seabed cable paired with a parallel protected land route along 500km of Kenya's coast. When the ocean-floor fibre fails, traffic reroutes. That redundancy, not raw bandwidth, is what's been missing.
For the Vipingo Special Economic Zone specifically, this matters beyond manufacturing. Direct, reliable connectivity is the thing that decides whether a data centre or a payments platform builds there — or goes somewhere else.
