Starlink Closes to Within 17 Subscribers of Zimbabwe's Entire Fibre Base
Starlink has come within 17 subscribers of matching the total subscriber count of Zimbabwe's entire fibre internet market, a milestone reached in under two years of operation in the country. The development is being read as a continent-wide signal of LEO satellite broadband's disruptive speed relative to fixed-line infrastructure.
Zimbabwe Broadband: $30 a month did what a decade of fibre couldn't
Satellite broadband's entire subscriber base in Zimbabwe was 3,814 connections in mid-2024. By early 2026 it was 86,488 — within 17 of matching every fibre line in the country.
The mechanism is blunt: Zimbabweans were paying the equivalent of 72 working hours just to afford one month of fixed broadband. Starlink walked in at $30 for uncapped speeds above 100Mbps. That's not a technology story — it's a pricing story.
And the ripple went further than Starlink's own customers. Operators like Liquid Home cut prices and rewrote packages to compete, meaning the real impact hit the whole market.
Africa's connectivity gap has never been mainly a hardware problem. It's an affordability problem. When something finally undercuts the incumbents hard enough, the numbers move fast.
