Airtel Africa: $1.1bn means little if diesel still runs the network
The headline number is impressive. But buried in the CEO's own comments is the thing that could quietly undermine all of it.
Running a Nigerian telecom site on diesel costs nearly four times what grid electricity would. Diesel that now costs twice what it did less than a year ago. Airtel is committing over a billion dollars to build more of a network that depends on fuel trucks reaching remote sites on time — and when they don't, the network simply goes dark.
You can lay all the fibre you want. If the power problem isn't solved, you're expanding the footprint of a fragile system, not a resilient one.
