Egypt Tops Africa Startup Funding for First Time as Nigeria Rebounds in H1 2026
H1 2026 data shows Egypt topping Africa's startup funding rankings for the first time, while Nigeria rebounds after a difficult period. Kenya and South Africa have slipped in the rankings, marking a significant reshaping of the continent's venture capital geography.
Egypt's big number: one raise, two stories
Egypt topping Africa's funding rankings for the first time sounds like a genuine power shift — and in some ways it is. Its 27% share of all African startup funding is the highest Africa: The Big Deal has ever recorded.
But Spiro raised $327 million on its own, matching Egypt's entire total. Spiro isn't Egyptian — it's now headquartered in Nairobi, incorporated in Dubai, and classified as pan-African precisely because no single country can claim it.
Strip that out, and Egypt's equity number drops to $183 million, behind Nigeria's $214 million. The headline is real. The story underneath it is messier.
