Foreign investment into Nigerian tech diversifies beyond fintech into defence-tech
Foreign investment into Nigerian technology is diversifying beyond fintech into new sectors including defence-tech, with a $22 million seed extension signalling appetite from international backers for previously overlooked verticals.
Terra Industries: defence dollars are rewriting what 'Nigerian tech' means
Lux Capital and 8VC — a firm co-founded by one of Palantir's founders — putting $22 million into a Lagos-based drone and autonomous security startup founded just two years ago is not a footnote.
For most of Nigeria's tech history, foreign capital had one destination: payments. Flutterwave, Paystack, the whole fintech wave. Defence and critical infrastructure barely registered.
Terra changes that framing. The investors arriving here aren't chasing consumer apps — they're backing hard technology with national security logic behind it. That's a different kind of conviction, and it tends to be stickier.
The real question is whether this stays a one-off or opens a door for Nigerian founders building in overlooked verticals who've been told the market only wants fintech.
