Airtel has postponed the opening of its $150 million Nxtra data centre in Kenya to July 2027, shifting the timeline for what is projected to be East Africa's largest data centre facility. The delay represents a significant setback for regional cloud capacity planning.
Nxtra Kenya: a four-month slip that reveals the real bottleneck
The headline is a delay. The detail is more instructive.
Nxtra's Tatu City site sits inside a Special Economic Zone with a dedicated 135MVA substation — meaning Airtel specifically chose a location to escape Kenya's ordinary grid constraints. And the project still slipped by a quarter.
If power is the binding constraint in AI infrastructure globally, and a facility that already solved its power problem is still running late, the harder constraint may simply be the complexity of building at this scale in East Africa for the first time. That is not a reason to doubt the project — it is a reason to treat every other data centre timeline on the continent as optimistic until proven otherwise.
