South African Fund Deploys $168 Million in Domestic Dry Powder Into Township Fibre and Mortgage Tech
A South African investment fund backed by local pension capital has disclosed $168 million in domestic dry powder targeting township fibre and mortgage technology, one of the larger locally sourced tech-investment commitments seen in the market. The fund's focus on township connectivity directly overlaps with the affordable fibre expansion trend tracked in recent days.
Local Capital: South African pension funds could own this — they're barely trying
Infinite Partners raised R2.8 billion entirely from South African pensions, insurers and banks — no foreign development finance, no overseas anchor. That's the real story.
But the fund itself points to the uncomfortable gap: Regulation 28 allows South African retirement funds to put up to 15 per cent of their money into private equity. Most sit below 2 per cent.
The capital to wire townships with fibre and modernise home-buying exists inside South Africa's own pension system, many times over. Infinite Partners found R2.8 billion of it. There are trillions more sitting on the sideline.
