Vercel Acquires Ethiopian-Founded Better Auth a Year After $5 Million Round
Vercel has acquired Better Auth, an AI authentication startup founded by an Ethiopian entrepreneur, approximately one year after the company raised a $5 million round. The exit is one of the few recorded acquisitions of an African-built startup by a top-tier global developer infrastructure company.
Better Auth: a self-taught coder from Addis Ababa just set the bar
Bereket Engida built Better Auth alone, in Ethiopia, before anyone gave him a cheque. By the time Vercel — one of the most influential developer platforms in the world — came calling, the library had 4.7 million weekly downloads and 850 open-source contributors.
The product won first. The recognition followed.
That sequence matters more than the exit itself. The usual story is that African technical founders need a Western address, a brand-name accelerator, or a warm introduction to get taken seriously. Engida got into Y Combinator because the software was already everywhere — Peak XV's own portfolio companies were using it before anyone made a formal bet.
Global infrastructure doesn't care where you built it. That's the thing worth holding onto.
