Kenya Licenses 25 More Digital Lenders as Mobile Credit Market Reaches $1.16 Billion
Kenya's Central Bank has licensed an additional 25 digital lenders, bringing the total number of formally regulated operators to 252 as the country's mobile lending market reaches $1.16 billion in outstanding credit. The licensing wave signals a maturing regulatory framework and deepening formal oversight of Kenya's digital credit sector.
Kenya Lending: 800 applications is the real headline
252 licensed lenders sounds like a mature market. The number that actually matters is 800 — that's how many firms applied since 2022, meaning more than half are still waiting, still operating in a grey zone, or gone.
The CBK built this framework to stop aggressive debt collectors and hidden interest rates from destroying people's livelihoods. That was the right call. But a queue of 550-plus pending applications suggests the licensing process is the bottleneck now — not the bad actors.
If compliance is genuinely becoming the entry ticket to growth, as the data suggests, then the speed of processing matters as much as the standards inside it.
