EBRD Backs Nigerian Grid-Tech Startup Beacon Power Services With $20.9 Million
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has committed $20.9 million to Beacon Power Services, a Nigerian grid technology startup. The investment is targeting Nigeria's estimated 4.7 million unmetered electricity customers as a core addressable market.
Nigeria's Grid Gap: the meter is the business model
Nearly four in every ten of Nigeria's electricity customers have no meter. They get an estimated bill, dispute it, stop paying, or pay less than they owe — and the distribution companies haemorrhage money they never actually collect.
Beacon Power Services' pitch, now backed by $20.9 million, is that fixing the measurement problem fixes the revenue problem. Their own data — and Proparco's reported figure of $600 million in cumulative revenue gains across partner utilities — suggests this isn't theoretical.
The deeper point: Nigeria's power crisis is often framed as a generation problem, a grid problem, a corruption problem. But a billing system built on guesswork is its own catastrophe. You can't fund new infrastructure from revenue you can't reliably collect.
