FTSE Russell Confirms Nigeria's Frontier Market Return From September 21
FTSE Russell has confirmed Nigeria's reinstatement to Frontier Market status, with the change set to take effect on September 21. The reinstatement reopens Nigerian equities to index-tracking institutional capital flows from international investors.
Nigeria's FTSE Return: being back on the list is the easy part
The harder question isn't whether Nigeria got readmitted to FTSE Russell's Frontier Market index — it did, effective 21 September. It's what happens next.
The Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers said it plainly: reclassification puts Nigerian stocks back on the radar of global index-tracking funds, but it doesn't automatically bring a surge of foreign money. Those funds can now consider Nigerian equities. Consideration is not capital.
The actual work — converting visibility into real participation — is what Nigeria struggled with the first time around. Getting back on the list is the credential. Building the market that keeps international investors once they arrive is the job.
