Irish Family Office and DRC Postal Service Build Digital Bank for 100 Million Unbanked
An Irish family office and the Democratic Republic of Congo's national postal service are collaborating to build a digital bank targeting up to 100 million unbanked people using the country's existing postal network as its distribution infrastructure. The initiative is described as a high-stakes financial inclusion bet in one of Africa's least-banked large populations.
Poste Finance: the payroll wedge is the whole strategy
304 post offices across a country larger than Western Europe isn't a distribution network — it's a starting point. The real unlock here is subtler: Poste Finance isn't trying to sign up 100 million individuals one by one. It's onboarding entire public-sector workforces in one go, then offering salary-backed loans where repayments come straight out of the payslip.
That's not just clever — it dramatically changes the risk. When the employer guarantees the deduction, a lender can extend credit to people with no credit history at all.
The DRC's unbanked population isn't unbanked because nobody tried. It's a market that has defeated serious attempts before. But a model that enters through the employer, not the individual, is a genuinely different bet — and the one worth watching closely.
