Nigeria's Bosun Tijani Launches ATLAS Continental AI Language Model Network
Nigeria's Minister of Communications Bosun Tijani has launched the ATLAS Network, a state-backed continental initiative to accelerate the development of African AI language models. The move is described as a rare instance of government-led AI infrastructure investment with pan-African reach.

Fewer than 2% of Africa's languages are meaningfully supported by modern AI — Tijani's own figure, and the problem ATLAS says it exists to fix.
But building a language model requires more than a launch stage. It requires massive amounts of written and spoken text in those languages, carefully labelled and cleaned. Nigeria's N-ATLAS spent a year quietly doing that groundwork for Nigerian languages. Scaling that to a continent of nearly 2,000 languages, across governments with wildly different resources and incentives, is a different order of challenge entirely.
The question isn't whether the ambition is right — it clearly is. It's whether the member states signing on will commit the unglamorous data work, or just the flag on the slide.
