Moniepoint Shuts Down MonieWorld UK Remittance Service After 14 Months
Moniepoint has wound down MonieWorld, its UK-based money transfer service, after approximately 14 months of operation, with the company refocusing its strategic attention on African markets. The closure highlights persistent product-market-fit challenges in Africa-to-UK remittance corridors for Nigerian fintech operators.
MonieWorld: the 70% growth that still wasn't enough
Moniepoint spent £1.2 million setting up in the UK, dropped another $2.5 million acquiring a regulated payments licence, then watched transaction volume grow 70% — and still walked away.
That's the uncomfortable detail here. This wasn't a product that failed to find users. It was a deliberate resource reallocation: the Africa business is simply bigger, faster, and more defensible than any diaspora corridor.
For the UK-Nigeria remittance space, the corridor friction remains very real — and Moniepoint's exit just cedes that ground to players like LemFi and SendOva who have chosen to stay. Sometimes the most telling signal isn't why a product failed. It's why a working one got cut anyway.
