Africa's First EV Battery Gigafactory in Morocco Secures €100 Million AfDB Backing
The African Development Bank has approved a €100 million facility to back Africa's first electric vehicle battery gigafactory, located in Morocco. The funding marks a continental industrial milestone in the transition toward domestic EV supply chain manufacturing.
Morocco's Gigafactory: Africa is making batteries, not just mining for them
The continent sits on vast reserves of the minerals that go into EV batteries — lithium, cobalt, manganese — yet almost all of the manufacturing value has flowed to Asian factories. Africa digs it up; someone else adds the margin.
This factory, run by Chinese battery maker Gotion and partly funded by the African Development Bank, is a direct challenge to that pattern. A 70% local industrial integration target means most of the production chain — from cathode materials to finished battery packs — is meant to happen on Moroccan soil.
That's the real bet here, and it's a serious one.
